My mentor works as an Attorney so she serves her clients in familial and civil law. She makes sure that her clients are treated at the best they can, even better than her sometimes. To Vonna M. Bagner, my mentor, she's not just all about money. Lately, we have been doing page replacements, filing, and recording data about her cases on Excel Spreadsheet. The workplace seems to be very calm and not very hectic.
I've done 4 blogs and they are not showing up for some reason..

My first day at the internship was an overall good day. It was a long travel to USF, about 2 hours, I had to wake up at 5AM and get to Bart before 6AM. I finally got to USF at 8AM and I met my mentor. She introduced me to all the player athletes and I got to sit in on one of the basketball team's practices. Then, they gave me the chance to walk around the campus to get a feel to where everything is. I saw the Cathedral, Weight Room, Museums, and even the Cafeteria. After I finished doing that, Rosie introduced me to Tim who was going to be one of my mentors. They told me about different sports injuries and about the ACL. I learned that if an ACL is torn, it takes about 6 months to recover after surgery. Rosie got me started on this project with a a student athlete who tore her ACL. I am going to help herrecover with her injury by performing special therapeutic procedures that all Sports Medical doctors do for their athletes. I'm excited to see how everything will work out!

Another great day in San Francisco. So far, we're working no more things that have to do with ACL injuries and how to prevent them. We went over a checklist on how to make general things for atheletes such as an icebag or a heat pocket. Also, we got to sit in on a Physical therapy session that had to do the girl I am a basing my project on. They were testing her ACL recovery since last week and it seems like she is doing really well. We also had to do a scavenger hunt for tools so that we get a strong feel of where everything is located. I met alot of people who also work in the training room and I discovered that most of them are either a Junior or Senior in college. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work here as a highschool student!
University of San Francisco 11/1/11
In my internship, my tasks are to assist the Athletic Trainers if they need any help with anything, acting as a student by taking down notes of how the Student Athletic Trainers act, and also studying two athletes with their ACL injuries. Over the past few weeks Ive been learning more about the basics of the ACL and it's purpose. I've learned that the ACL is one of the major component ligaments in the knee. Other then that I've been studying two Athletes that has torn their ACL which will also give me more information about the ACL. Ive been introduced to the tools that they use in the training room to know how to utilize them so I could make the other Trainers' jons easier and help athletes. On a day to day basis, I tell my mentor what I have done in the assignments that she assigns us through email every week then athletes come in and get treatment from the athletic trainers. As of now, I am not so familiar with properly using some of the tools so right now I'm just there to help them to basic things such as handing them tools that they need, clean, making ice bags, etc. But eventually I will be able to use the tools and start doing more hands-on work! As they are working with the athletes my job is to ask any that i have for them and gain some knowledge dealing with Exercise Sports and Science. With the questions I ask it will help me better understand the work environment in my workplace. This work will definitely help me to become and expert with the Anterior Cruciate Ligament so that I can possibly present this to my school!
University of San Francisco 11/8/11
During my internship, I noticed that the main leadership skills that I am using the most are Productive Collaboration and Resourceful Problem Solving. For my Internship I have to use Productice Collaboration because for my workplace my project is based on studying two athletes with a torn ACL and I am working on this project with my colleague, Adrian Batac. My job is to complete my projects based off the notes I take and collaborate effectively with Adrian as well as the two athletes I am studying. I also need Resourceful Problem Solving, this will help me be successfull as I am there at my internship. I use Resouceful Problem Solving because in my project I am working on two athletes that torn their ACL, and its my responsibility to communicate with them and use them as resources to get all the information I can get and complete my project. My workplace is also a social environment, I have to use this skill to use my peers as resources in case I don't know how to use something. So far I'm using these leadership skills just as they are defined. In terms of my project I need to use these leadership skills in order to have an efficient, completed project. I am leaning on my peers for help and asking for clarification when I need them. I believe that my mentor uses the exact leadership skills I use because she has to interact with alot of people as well. The reason for this is becaus she is one of the main athletic directors at USF. During her work she needs to collaborate with every athletic trainer and she also needs to use resources that will help her through her works in order to have the training room run smoothly, this will also help the athletes out.

Today was a very calm day. Although, our arrival to USF was a pain because BART took a very long time Usually around 8AM to 12AM is the busiest times because that is when the athletes come back from practice to get relieved. Adrian and I also got to work on our project and have a better understanding of the goals of our studies. We study and learn more about the Anterior Cruciate Ligament also known as the ACL. I will be doing this by studying two Athletes who have torn their ACL from playing Soccer and Cross Country, and they are currently in the process of recovering their knee. The way we came up with this idea is that my mentor decided to have us work and study the ACL, which I am really interested in because I am a basketball player. Basketball athletes tend to injure their ACL more often. As an athlete I would like to know all my muscles and where they are located, what effects can happen to my body, and i want to learn how to recover from an injury. And learning and studying more about the ACL is a good way to start it off. My mentor and I actually started to work on the project since the first day I arrived in my workplace. For the next three to four weeks my mission to acquire a better knowledge of the ACL, I already know what to do for my project. My goal is to pay attention to every point of detail and be patient with all the information that will be given to me, but most importantly bring a positive attitude.
University of San Francisco 11/21/11
Today was another successful day. We got to learn more about the ACL as well as training our skills in ankle wrapping. Also, for the first time I used Ultra Sound on an athlete which gave me more experience with that tool. UltraSound, is a machine that sends sound waves through the injury of an athlete. These eases tension and pain and usually occurs in the ankle or foot. Adrian and I were also given time to interview our athletes who sufferred from an ACL injury. After that, we took down notes that would be useful in our Keynote that we will be using to present our work for the Womens' sports teams at our school. We met with one of the main Sports Doctors at University of San Francisco and he taught us about therapeutic massages and information about preventing ankle and knee injuries. Finally, my mentor gave Adrian and I a chance to talk with one of the Professors in Kinesiology at USF. This would give us better insight of what its like to be a student studying Exercise Sports and Science. He also gave us tips about admissions and very influential words about the importance of earning a degree. We learned that it does not matter what major we have, that as long as we have a degree we expand and work ahrd to get more degrees. I was very inspired and thankful that my mentor gave us a chance to talk with him.

Throughout my experience in the Athletic Department at USF, I remember how difficult tasks used to be for me such as stepping in as an intern for the athletic department and having very limted information about the type of tools they use for the athletes and specific muscles and injuries that we need to know. From my mentor's standpoint of knowing that I am just a beginner, she never gave us any advanced tasks such as giving physical massages to athletes or properly hooking them up to the sports medicine technology. today was one of the first days that she allowed me to do these difficult tasks. My mentor felt that I was prepared and ready for such a task. I overcame these challenges by paying attention to my mentor and to other athletic trainers orstudent assistants that was in the department because they have more experience and most likely know what they're doing. Also besides facing variety of challenges and overcoming them, I was able to improve on my communication skills and collaboration. By assessing that I had to ask clarifying questions to my mentor or any athletic trainer about certain tasks I was unfamiliar with. Even beyond that, I kept in good communication with my mentor in case I was going to be late. This is important as an athletic trainer and in the general work field because as a trainer you need to communicate with a lot of the athletes and with the athletic trainers that you are working with. This makes the athletic environment flow smoothly and properly.
University of San Francisco 12/5/11
During my Workplace Learning Experience today, I have been following the regular routine since day one. I enter the room, sign in the log sheet, and begin asking athletes if they need help with anything in particular. Also, I was helping out my mentor taking care of some specific athletes who have broken a bone or ligament. I was working with an athlete who was just beginning his rehabilitation by walking him through certain exercises that my mentor asked me to tell him to perform. I asked the athlete to work his leg strength by standing on a balance beam and testing his coordination. Also, since he was a soccer player, I asked him to stand on one leg and lightly kick a soccver ball to me as I gently tossed it to his feet. I also have realized that throughout my internship experience from day one my communication and my collaborating skills improved. I felt this way because I was more comfortable when asking for clarifying questions and I always tried to interact with different people. Since we have two more days of our WLE, I wanted to do really well by offerring as much help as I possibly can. My communication skills improved by being more social in my workplace and with that I felt more comfortable working there and it made everything easier for me. The reason why my work place can be a good place to work at is because the environment can flow smoothly even though it can hectic at times, the workers there communicate effectively and collaborate productively and thats the reason it flows great and
its consistent. Without it, the place might run differently and less smoothly.

As WLE starts to come to an end I realized that there is many things that I will be missing.
I realized that I will miss everybody in this community such as my mentors, student assistants, co-workers,
and the athletes. My mentors taught me a lot more than just the ACL. In fact, my mentors and I got to know eachother a little bet every week by having cool conversations and just talking about how our weekends went and how the sports' teams have been doing in their season so far. Even though I didn't really spend time with some of the employees, student assistants, and the other athletes I will be
missing them too. I had a few conversations with them and whenever I did talk with them they always seemed to be really chill and professional at the same time. They all made everything flow smoothly. Honestly, I've never had a bad day at my internship because the days have always ran so smoothly. I can honestly say this internship was much better than my internship
from last year. In the future, this workplace learning experience will help me become more of a person that will start communicating a lot to solve problems and realize that it's not about what you know but about who you know. After working at this internship, I feel that opportunities like these don't always come around and I am very appreciative that I got to spend my 10 weeks at the University of San Francisco.

This was my very last day at the University of San Francisco! Adrian and I presented our Keynotes to all of the staff members in the Athletic Department and I must admit, it was nervewrecking. In the end, they said we did great but they gave us alot of strong feedback that would make our presentation even stronger. After gaining all the feedback we needed to bring to the girls' sports teams at Impact Academy, it was time that we said our Goodbyes and Farewells. I'm not going to lie, I was sad that I was leaving. I've never really been around such a positive group of professionals who all understood the morals of hard work and dedication. I gave everyone a manly hug and finally I gave my letter to my mentor and my final evaluation sheet. Our mentors left the room for awhile and Adrian and I waited around until they finished the evaluation. When they came back, they came with University of San Francisco Lanyards and Beanies to give to us as souvenirs and something to remember as we left. After the internship, my views of Sports Medicine has not changed since when I
first called their phone. I do hope that I will attend that school in the near future and pursue a major in Kinesiology. Thank you very much USF for everything.
